How can we use design to build a better world?

That's the question we asked back in 2000. It's true – we've been around since the internet was just a baby, thinking about how to give architects easy but powerful tools to bring their designs into the real world.

Cue the lightbulb moment

Architectural engineer Brad Schell approached software developer Joe Esch with a challenge: to build a professional 3D design software that is both powerful and approachable. Shortly after, the first iteration of SketchUp was released out of Boulder, Colorado.

Perfect timing

SketchUp provided designers with an invaluable resource: time. The 30 minutes required to mock up a model was now possible in 30 seconds. Not only could designs move more quickly, but SketchUp expanded the room for exploration, creativity, and play.

That brings us to now

Over 20 years later, the world has changed, but the inspiration remains the same. It's our mission to provide faster, easier, and more powerful tools so you can do less drudgery and more dreaming, designing, and building.
